Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Westminster Oaks Maguire Center for Lifelong Learning is not expected to be available for CMS membership meetings until 2021. Therefore, CMS has reformatted its fall schedule to still offer the same CME topics in a virtual format.
September CME – has been changed to a free 1-hour CME opportunity that we have available through the University of Florida’s Department of Epidemiology on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia, funded through the Florida Department of Health, titled, “From Brain Disorders to Brain Health: Prevention and Management of Cognitive Decline and Dementia.” It is a panel discussion format. Those interested in the CME can learn more and access it at the following link: http://healthstreet.program.ufl.edu/healthstreet-intiatives/continuing-medical-education-cme/.
This pre-recorded CME may be accessed at any time. You do not need to wait until September. Through this CME, cognitive health experts from UF provide the latest information on the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, including referral to specialty care all from the comfort of your own home. CME credit will be coordinated through UF.
The Florida Medical Association has graciously agreed to assist the Capital Medical Society in providing the following two CMEs virtually:
October 20, 2020 CME, 6:30 PM – Dr. Suzanne Harrison will present the required 2-hour CME on Domestic Violence virtually.
November 10, 2020 CME, 6:30 PM – Terry Coonan, J.D., Executive Director at FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights will present the required 1-hour CME on Human Trafficking virtually.
Watch for emails from CMS with more information on the October and November CMEs.

THANK YOU TO ALL PPE DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS!
SOME HEROES MAKE FACE SHIELDS, SHARE A STASH OF N95 MASKS, OR PUT DISPOSABLE GLOVES AND BOOTIES ON THOSE FACING THE UNSEEN ATTACK OF THEIR ARCHENEMY – COVID-19
The Capital Medical Society Foundation applauds those who have responded to the call for donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). During the COVID-19 pandemic, donated PPE is critical for the safety of local healthcare professionals. Supply chains are overburdened, and orders are just not getting through. Donated PPE is a physician’s armor against the viral attack that compromises health and ability to care for patients. All of the donations were distributed immediately and called into action. The PPE shortages are putting our healthcare professionals at risk. We hope others will join these heroes in protecting our frontline superheroes. The following generous physicians, individuals, local businesses, churches and civic organizations have provided in-kind PPE donations or gifts to purchase PPE:
Many thanks to “Service above Self Volunteers”
Thank you!

Donate Your N-95 Masks & Other PPEs
The Capital Medical Society is accepting drop-offs of any new, unused N-95 masks that community members or businesses want to donate to the healthcare community in Tallahassee. Often the public may not realize that they have N-95 masks in their utility rooms, garages, sheds, basements, etc. Many masks that are purchased for residential and business purposes, for lawn care, for allergens, for paint, for fumes, etc., – are sometimes printed N95 (which quantifies them as respirators).
Details:
Disposable safety glasses, facial shields, gowns, new, unopened N-95 masks, nitrile disposable gloves, surgical masks, touchless thermometers.

March 30 is National Doctors’ Day, a day to recognize physicians, their service, and their contributions to society and communities. This year, celebrate National Doctors’ Day by choosing to make an honorary donation to the Capital Medical Society Scholarship Fund supporting future medical leaders like Jackie Hanners.
Here is an excerpt from a note we received from scholarship recipient, Jackie Hanners:
“I cannot thank you all enough for making this scholarship possible. With this scholarship I am able to pay for a years’ worth of car insurance and health insurance in addition to setting aside some for STEP 2 test prep and the test itself. Thank you!”
Jackie Hanners, FSU COM Class of 2021
